Carmen Electra on Tae-Bo, bad boys and keeping her life in balance
Q: Your mom was a karate expert?
A: A third-degree black belt. She used
to break boards-she was hard-core. But she wanted me to be a dancer and was afraid I would hurt myself, so she wouldn't let me study karate.
Q: You shared her love of movement.
A: Yes. I remember my mom helping
me practice for dance contests. The two of us would go on these great trips- staying in hotels, having fun.
Q: How do you stay fit now?
A: Tae-Bo. I like the energy and the
music- it's loud and it gets you in the mood to work out.
Q: Have you gone on any strange diets?
A: When I was 14, I tried not eating at all. That was the worst. You end up eating more anyway because you get into a starvation cycle. I got so weak I couldn't finish a ballet class.
Q: Within the same year, your mother and sister passed away and you married and divorced Dennis Rodman. Did your perspective on life change?
A: I learned not to run away from problems. Allowing yourself to feel pain can be really scary. I started telling myself that it was okay to be frightened, that I can have these emotions. Once I let myself deal with it, I got stronger.
Q: Why do you like "bad boys"?
A: I think it's the challenge and the excitement. A bad boy will keep you on your toes. My current boyfriend is known as a bad boy.
Q: How do you maintain balance?
A: I can be an extreme person. I had that time in my life where there was so much pain, and ! was going out a lot. And then I went too far in the other direction, staying in every night reading spiritual books. Recently, ! learned to be somewhere in the middle; I eat healthy food, I read, and I stay positive. But I also go out dancing and have fun.
Q: What's your biggest vice?
A: Coca-Cola. I drink six to eight cans a day. Is there a rehab center for Coca-Cola drinkers?
